HAIKU: Purest of poems, a haiku contains in its seventeen syllables a seasonal allusion as well as a distinct pause or shift. Cherry blossoms and swallows mean spring; red maple leaves and deer convey autumn. Nature and its ephemeral beauty—this is haiku. Japanese woodblock artists have often drawn their water from the same wells of creativity used by haiku poets. A pleasure boat on a moonlit lake, a dozing bird beside a turning leaf—it should surprise no one that Bashō, greatest of haiku poets, was an accomplished painter.

TIFFANY LYNCH: The atmospheric paintings of Tiffany Lynch (British, b. 1968) often feature strong, stylized graphics of creatures such as foxes, butterflies, and birds set amidst ethereal woodlands. Lynch draws her inspiration from the magic of nature and its ever-changing beauty through the seasons—along river banks, parks, hedgerows, and forests. She creates from an artists cooperative she cofounded called Studio Greenhouse, in Brighton’s North Laine. Lynch began her career with studies in illustration at Harrow School of Art and Design and Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design. For her paintings, Lynch works in acrylic on canvas, always beginning her painting journey from her pen-and-ink sketchbook drawings. In addition to regular appearances in galleries and art shows, her artwork has been published by Penguin, Picador, the Independent, the Telegraph, and Coast Magazine.
